LaMalfa Statement on Passage of PRO Act

Statement

Date: Feb. 6, 2020
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale) released the following statement after the House passed the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act.

LaMalfa said: "This legislation is the most aggressive of its kind in history -- going further than California's extremist AB-5. The PRO Act will single-handedly erase independent contractors from the marketplace; jobs that allow people to make their own schedules and work for themselves. Most people often only associate ridesharing companies like Uber and Lyft with the term "independent contractors.' In the modern economy, independent contractors include, doctors, contractors, journalists, photographers, barbers, truck drivers, hairdressers, lawyers and much more. As we've seen from California, people are losing their jobs because of this terrible policy. The PRO Act would detract from our soaring economy and record low unemployment by drastically increasing prices on everyday services. Workers themselves would lose the greatest attraction of the gig economy: controlling their own lives. Congress should not look to California as a blueprint for success when it comes to laws and regulations. This legislation is the latest in a series of poorly thought out policies originated in Sacramento that Washington, DC hyper-partisan Democrats want to push on the rest of the country."
